10 MILES IN 30 MINUTES?
Yesterday was Easter Sunday. Weather was nice. Not quite warm enough to be out with a jacket, but warm enough to ride with shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.
With that in mind, I was anxious to really put myself to the test regarding how fast I could ride my new Cannondale.
Bill and I have talked about tackling this 10 mile route that we know like the back of our hands. Our goal: 10 miles in 30 minutes. Do the math. That's an average of 20mph the whole time.
So yesterday was try #1 just to see what we could do. On a side note, Bill rode 45 miles on Saturday, and I rode 42 miles on Saturday. My legs were still tired, but I was up to see what my bike could do...
Looking back at my cycling journal, January, February and March, I averaged about 15.4mph on my outings.
Yesterday, Bill and I cranked out an 18.8 average. 10.2 miles in 34 minutes. Not too shabby. We have some work ahead of us, but to be fair, we hit a good clip of head-winds for a good part of the ride.
I know for a fact that if the weather was about 10 degrees warmer and the wind wasn't present, we can hit that 20mph average. 3 minute miles baby.
Also, we started out the ride yesterday w/o warming up.
10 miles in 30 minutes. Totally in reach.
This morning was my only time today that I was going to get to ride. The temps were in the low 40's, which was fine. Damn wind though was blowing nicely.
I'm really starting to truly despise the wind. It would be one thing if it was a tail wind, but that's never the case.
I got in 10.2 miles. My average stunk because I was in my neighborhood. Too many cul-de-sacs to turn around in.
Tomorrow I head to San Francisco for 3-days. 3 days of NO riding. Ugh! Friday I will be back and I'm hoping to have try #2 at 10 miles in 30 minutes.
Giddy up!
